The specimen, observed 1987–2021 across three continents and at least four distinct plumages: founder, fugitive, oracle, defendant. It built the industry's first immune system, then spent three decades as a study in everything an immune system cannot catch.
What you are about to witness is a full migration cycle — boardroom to jungle to timeline to cell — performed by a single organism at maximum volume. Most specimens in this archive counterfeit their plumage. This one's plumage was real; it was the migrations that got complicated.
A warning before we begin: the specimen died with every criminal charge against it untested. Charged is not convicted, and this file never pretends otherwise. Every event below carries its receipt. Both sides get the microphone. The dead get the same rules as the living.

1987
The immune system ships
Founds McAfee Associates and launches the first commercial antivirus software. The name becomes the product; the product becomes an industry. FACT
Resigns from the company and sells off his stake, reportedly for tens of millions. Everything the McAfee company did after 1994 — the acquisitions, the rebrandings, the products on your work laptop — happened without him. The man and the brand share a name and nothing else. FACT
Taxonomy matters here more than anywhere else in the archive. When this file says McAfee, it means the animal, not the habitat it abandoned three decades ago.
The second act opens on an island. It will close in an Orlando courtroom, six years later, with nobody at the defense table.
NOV 2012
The death of Gregory Faull
Gregory Faull, McAfee's neighbor on Ambergris Caye — who had complained about McAfee's dogs — is found shot dead. Belizean police name McAfee a person of interest and ask to question him. He was never charged in the death — not then, not ever. He denied any involvement, said he feared Belizean authorities, and went into hiding rather than present himself for questioning. FACT
Vice magazine, embedded with the fugitive, publishes a photo — "We Are With John McAfee Right Now, Suckers" — with the iPhone's GPS coordinates still in the EXIF data, placing him at a resort in Guatemala. He admits the location, is detained by Guatemalan authorities, and is ultimately deported to the United States. Belize never charges him. FACT
Savor the ecology of this moment: a man who sold the world software to catch hostile files, located by a hostile file. The field does not often hand you symmetry this clean.
"How to Uninstall McAfee Antivirus" — the self-parody
Fresh off the Belize saga and now a global tabloid fixture, McAfee leaned all the way into the persona. He wrote, produced and starred in a deliberately absurd, NSFW-adjacent satirical short titled "How to Uninstall McAfee Antivirus" — a mock-instructional video ridiculing the software company that still bore his name, the one he had walked away from in 1994. It is the definitive McAfee-the-troll artifact: the founder cheerfully torching the brand from the outside, on camera, for the lulz. He opens it straight to camera, in his own words: "My name is John McAfee. I'm the founder of the McAfee Antivirus Software Company. Although I've had nothing to do with this company for over 15 years, I still get volumes of mail asking, how do I uninstall this software? I have no idea." Faull's estate wins its wrongful-death suit in Florida federal court — by default judgment, McAfee having declined to defend the case. Damages: $25 million. A default is what a court enters when one side does not show up; it is not a verdict after a contest of evidence. Third act: the specimen discovers a new watering hole where attention converts directly to currency, and brings to it the one asset no regulator had yet priced — a million followers who remembered the name on the shrink-wrap.
2017–2018
The coin-a-day era
His Twitter account becomes a promotion engine. Per the SEC's later complaint: from November 2017 through February 2018 he recommended at least seven ICOs to his followers while allegedly collecting $23.1 million in undisclosed compensation — and, when investors asked whether he was paid to promote, allegedly denied it. Arrested in Spain. The same day, the DOJ unseals a Tennessee grand-jury indictment for tax evasion and willful failure to file returns, 2014–2018, and the SEC files its ICO-touting complaint in Manhattan. Charges and allegations; he contests extradition from a Spanish cell. CHARGED
Manhattan federal prosecutors unseal an indictment charging McAfee and his cryptocurrency-team adviser Jimmy Watson with conspiracy to commit commodities and securities fraud, wire fraud, touting fraud, and money-laundering conspiracy — an alleged scalping scheme in verge, dogecoin, reddcoin and other altcoins said to have reaped more than $13 million. Extradition approved; found dead within hours
Spain's National Court authorizes his extradition to the United States on the tax charges. Hours later, McAfee, 75, is found dead in his cell at the Brians 2 penitentiary outside Barcelona. Prison authorities' initial finding points to suicide. FACT
A Spanish court closes the investigation, ruling the death a suicide: "There is not a single element of suspicion, of a charge against a third party, of criminal behaviour," per the ruling reported by Reuters. His widow, Janice McAfee, refused to accept the finding and sought a second autopsy; the family's appeal for a deeper investigation was part of the same proceeding. No US criminal charge against John McAfee was ever tried. The SEC and CFTC civil actions against him ended without any judgment on the merits against the man. The $25 million Faull default and the Spanish suicide ruling are the only adjudications in this entire file — one civil and uncontested, one about his death rather than his conduct. Everything else on this page is an allegation that outlived its chance to be tested. FACT

The pattern a skeptic would note: when Belizean police wanted to question him, he hid and fled the country rather than answer [8][11]. When Faull's estate sued, he did not defend, and $25 million was entered against him by default [9]. The one consistent behavior across two decades is that no accusation ever got its day in court with him in the room.
He denied everything, and nothing was ever proven. Not the ICO allegations, not the pump-and-dump, not the tax counts — he died before any trial, and the presumption of innocence survives him on every criminal charge on this page. Civil allegations by the SEC and CFTC were exactly that: allegations, never reduced to judgment against him.
On Belize: he was never charged, anywhere, by anyone. He denied any involvement in Faull's death and said publicly that he fled because he feared Belizean authorities, not the question — his stated position, on the record since 2012 [8][12]. The $25 million judgment is a default — a procedural outcome, not a weighing of evidence he contested.
His stated position on the US cases: that the prosecutions were retaliation for his years of loud anti-tax politics — he ran for president twice on the Libertarian ticket saying so [12]. His family did not accept the suicide ruling and sought a second autopsy; their dispute is part of this record too [7].

Scoped to the claims, never the man, and never past what the record holds. The claim "McAfee ran a crypto pump-and-dump" is a charge and a civil allegation — he died before any court tested it, so it stands unproven, forever. The claim "McAfee killed his neighbor" was never even charged; the whole adjudicated record there is a civil default entered against an empty chair. The claim "McAfee evaded his taxes" got as far as an approved extradition, and no further.
What the record does hold: two adjudications — a $25 million default he declined to contest, and a Spanish court's suicide ruling his family disputes — and a twenty-year pattern of never once standing in the room where an accusation could be resolved.
