Here is a creature that thrives not on what happens but on what might. Its diet is fear, its habitat the press release, and its display a very large number followed by the word "billion." Where other organisms in this archive forged a credential or lifted a chapter, this one manufactured a climate — a permanent weather system of impending cyber-doom, updated for whatever the headlines feared that season.
No court ever ruled on any of it. This is a reputational case, not a criminal one, and the archive says so plainly. The field checked the numbers instead. Every event below carries its receipt. Both sides get the microphone.

Per attrition.org's archival record, mi2g in 1996 is a web-development and automotive-information company — running a car portal called Carlounge and a search engine called MIDAS. The "security intelligence firm" is still a few years away.

The credentials in progress
Across these years Matai describes himself as submitting a PhD thesis at Imperial College London on "The Creation and Protection of Online Wealth in Computing." By 2003, attrition notes, no verified PhD appears in his official biography. The thesis, like the attacks to come, remains perpetually imminent.
Note the tense. Not "holds a doctorate." Always "in the process of." A credential in the future perfect is a hard thing to fact-check and an easy thing to imply.

The rebrand to intelligence
mi2g re-emerges as a "security intelligence" firm and dates its data-collection to 1995 — papering the car-portal years over with a founding legend. The product is the same forever after: alarming statistics, sold to journalists as intelligence.
ACT II — THE STATISTICS FACTORY (1999–2002)
Now the machine runs at capacity. Observe the output: figures precise to the last digit, sourced to nothing anyone can inspect, arriving exactly when the news cycle has a hole to fill.

The Y2K prophecy
mi2g predicts a Y2K virus will inflict widespread losses. Anti-virus firms dismiss the alert; the millennium turns without incident. The Register later files this as "the main exhibit in the case against the company."

The mirror in the numbers
mi2g reports "over 1,700 serious attacks world-wide… costing more than £4.3 billion." Attrition points out the figure suspiciously mirrors its own public defacement data — roughly 3,746 recorded for 1999, halved — raising the possibility that mi2g's proprietary intelligence was reconstructed from a free feed.
A predator that hunts is fed by its own effort. A scavenger is fed by others'. The archive does not assert which this is — it merely notes the numbers arrived pre-killed.

mi2g claims 57,977 "overt digital attacks" to date, costing $7.3 billion worldwide for 2002. Security researcher Richard Forno gives the methodology its enduring name: "mathematical masturbation."

The field arrives carrying two things a fabulist cannot survive: a competing methodology and a sense of humor. mi2g meets the first with denial and the second with a lawyer.

Forno calls out a mi2g "feeble attempt to capitalise on the public's visceral fear of real terrorism" by tying the insider threat of disgruntled employees to the September 11 hijackers. A mi2g briefing, meanwhile, discusses "counter-attack-forces" against "digital terrorism" in the "5th dimension defence shield."

A mi2g report attributes 44% of software vulnerabilities to Windows and ranks Mac and some Unix variants as safer. Microsoft's security-business VP publicly disputes it, calling the numbers "misleading." When Redmond is the one calling your vulnerability stats unsound, the field takes notice.

Scoped to the claims, never the man. The claim "mi2g is a security-intelligence firm collecting data since 1995" is contradicted by its own archived 1996 pages — a car portal — per attrition's documentary work. The claim "these are rigorous threat statistics" drew sustained methodological criticism from named researchers and a public rebuke from Microsoft. And no court ever ruled on a word of it: this is a reputational case, and the archive marks it so.
Weigh the costly signals: mi2g's answer to a competing methodology was denial, and its answer to a satirist was a formal complaint. The satirist, for the record, ranked higher on Google.
